The Minneapolis Institute of Art is home to an outstanding collection of over 90,000 works of art from around the world. Established in 1883, the institute has collected works from over 120 countries, including paintings, carvings, and sculptures from more than 5,000 years of world history. The exhibition focuses on Africa and Asia in some sections, while others focus on ceramics and textiles, with contemporary art and video installations also included. Among other masterpieces, guests can see work by Gaugin, van Gogh, and El Greco in the museum. Visitors will also get to explore the outdoor exhibits of statues & gardens.

In the early 1900s, the Minneapolis Society of Fine Arts conceived of an arts complex to serve the city. McKim, Mead, and White of New York City won a competition for a large wood and plaster model of the Institute of Arts. The Society’s plans for the complex included not just a museum but two wings, an art school, and an orchestra hall.
